Bow ties sales increase thanks to Matt Smith

When Matt Smith became the 11th Doctor he increased the sales of Bow Ties in the UK the retailer Topman reported an increase of 94%. Bow ties are thought to have originated from Croatian mercenaries in the 17th century during the Prussian wars. They used bow ties to hold together the openings in their shirts. It was later adopted by the French who developed it in the form we now know.

Giant snooker ball

If you was to scale up a snooker ball to the same size as the earth there would be mountains three times higher than anything found on earth. Although a snooker ball appears to be very smooth it is far from it, the surface is covered in small imperfections and ridges that scaled up will become massive mountains and Vally's

The Earth weighs around 6,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000 Kg

Bit of a science one this time the Earth weighs 6,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000 Kg ! how do we know this ? Good question everything that has a mass has a gravitational attraction to each other so if you put two weights together they will attract each other now this will be a very small attraction but if you have instruments sensitive enough you will be able to read this. From this attraction you can work out the mass of the objects. It is worth mentioning that having a weight is reliant on a gravitational field it is more accurate to state this weight as the mass of the Earth as this will not change depending the strength of the gravitational field.

Hippos can open their mouths to over 4 feet high

A hippo can open its mouth to around 150 degrees this means that they can have a opening of four feet this is more than enough space to fit  a small child in to. Hippos also have 20 inch teeth in that huge mouth.

All of the clocks in the movie "Pulp Fiction" read 4:20

Apparently all of the clocks in the movie pulp fiction read 4:20, this is a myth that has been doing the rounds for a while now and it is in no way shape or form true. Two scenes put stop to this being true, one when Jimmy, Vince and Jules are drinking coffee in the kitchen the clock reads 8:15 also when Vince and Jules retentive the brief case the clock reads 7:22.

The dot that appears over the letter "i" is called a tittle

The small dot that appears above a lower case i and j is called a tittle, it is a integral part of these Glyphs.

Lightning strikes about 6,000 times per minute on this planet

Around the world there are around 6,000 lighting strikes per minute on the earth and sea, not really a inconceivable number really considering the size of the world and the amount of weather patterns there are

They have square watermelons in Japan

Strange but apparently true this one, farmers grow square water melons to make them easier to store in fridges and to stack. Fitting 4 round shaped watermelons in a fridge is quite difficult so a Zentsuji farmer came up with the idea of putting the watermelons in a square glass container while it is still growing to force it in to the square shape. Each watermelon retails for around 10,000 YEN or £68 making them quite expensive.

The youngest pope was 11 years old

Well this one possibly isn't true, sources reference somewhere between 11 and 17 (sort of a big gap there) but it is more likely that he was 18. The pope in question was Pope Benedict IX quite a interesting Pope who was accused of "many vile adulteries and murders", being primarily homosexual and holding orgies in Lateran palace

In the Caribbean there are oysters that can climb trees

As you can imagine this is utter rubbish, Oysters cannot climb trees ! A distinct lack of arms and legs puts stop to that one, what actually happens is the high tide comes in and leaves oysters attached to trees. When the tide finally goes back out the Oysters are left attached to the trees giving way to the belief that they can climb trees

One out of ten children in Europe are conceived on an IKEA bed

Are they better for conceiving ? unlikely its more than likely due to the fact they are cheap and readily available but as it stands the estimates are that one in ten children in Europe are conceived in a IKEA bed. It's a good claim to have I suppose IKEA helping the world conceive since 1987

Cracking your knuckles does not actually hurt your bones or cause arthritis. The sound you hear is just gas bubbles bursting.

So what is actually happening then ? Well when you crack your knuckles you move your joints in and out of position this causes pressure on the Synovial fluid (a lubricant surrounding your joints) when this happens bubbles form and burst causing the cracking sound you hear. As for this causing other problems a study of 300 people who cracking their knuckles on a regular basis was performed and no evidence was found it causes Arthritis
